Seigneur

I believe that I know three things about Lord Archer:

1. According to the first Bridget Jones movie, he's written some books.

2. That's probably not just a catchy nickname, he's actually a Lord. I imagine there's a mansion or two and a Lady to boot.

3. He must have done something God awful to get kicked out of his own party.

The Tories, from what I understand, are akin to America's GOP (making less and less sense now with Blair advocating the Iraq war and nuclear power) but to be honest I haven't figured out British politics at all. We've had some pretty awful Republicans over the years: Ollie North, Richard Nixon, Shannon Doherty, etc. But none of them have ever gotten kicked out. Is Lord Archer trying to run for office or he just wants to be a Tory again? I don't get what the big deal is.

In the dying years of the major government (so, all of them) there was a series of "sleaze" scandals, wherein prominent tory frontbenchers were caught being gay and unfaithful, hanging themselves for erotic kicks, taking money to ask questions in parliament, and lying on the witness stands. Lord Archer perjured himself and, unusually, was jailed for it. He is a very unpleasant reminder of a very nasty party.

The difference between Tories and Republicans is that Tories are not evil. They are just stupid.

Lord archer is aka Jerrfey archer the best selling "novelist". He was made a Lord by Prime Minister John Major before his final fall from grace, although there had been many previous allegations of, shall we say, less than snow-white behaviour. He was originally an MP but went bankrupt before re-inventing himself as a literary colossus and easing back into politics. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Archer for the gory details and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_the_United_Kingdom for UK politics 101...

Although Katie mentioned the whole perjury thing, no-one has yet mentioned Archer's best/worst trait: that he is a compulsive liar of the most ridiculous and "how did he think he'd get away with that?" sort. That said, most of the time he has indeed got away with it. In fact, in 1987 the Daily Star was made to pay him £500,000 because of them.

1) Archer is eager to point out he is an Oxford Graduate. Oxford University is keen to point out that, um, no he isn't.

2) Archer is proud of his father, William Archer, one time vice-consul in Singapore. Except... they aren't actually related... Nor was his real father a decorated war hero as Archer tubthumps. Rather, he was a convicted fraudster and bigamist.

3) Alongside his Oxford Degree, Archer also has a degree from a prestigious US University. Prestigous in the sense you can buy their degrees via mail order.

He's also a neighbour girlie, with one of the best views in London from his penthouse at the top of Peninsula Heights - the tall white building on the riverside of Albert Embankment.
